Teaching a grey to sit

Re: Teaching a grey to sit
Etta sits...she came from the track doing it so I don't know if she was taught to sit or is just one of those greys that do...I haven't tried to give her the command because our Gable doesn't sit...or even know what sit means. I have researched online through google and ask.com and there are some articles out there that give suggestions on how to teach your grey to sit. Also, Etta is like Cooky on lead. She never tries to walk in front of you, stays on your side, waits for you to go first through the door or will wait for you to invite her in if you are inside and she is not...such a lady with all her manners. And then there is Gable, who will listen on his lead, if you insist
Although, he will run in front of me to get out the door if he is excited about a walk or car ride, he does wait to be invited out of the van or up the stairs or into a room.

I've got Bogie in Manners & More now and we decided after so much trauma (and drama) that a nice "stay and stand" was just as good as a sit. I just need to remember to have a pocketful of treats and he'd give me a pedicure if he could figure it out!! I think Carly will be much easier when I take her.

Cooky sounds like one of a kind. For the most part Dermit is good on a leash, but he usually has to be the first one through the door. I've heard of that behavior relating to dominance issues, but outside of that one thing he's never really been disobedient or challenged authority. I've tried to work with him about letting the master go through the door first, but I don't think I've been consistent enough with it.

Yeah, JoAnn I bet you have to have some strong arms for swooping them down, HA !
Cooky, came from a Prison program, She came to me with the knowledge of some 20+ commands. which was nice, ALthough, sometimes I wondered if the inmates were mean to her, they had the dogs 24/7 in the cells with them. She was a smarty, and I will never meet a more intellegent, well behaived dog than she was. She could sit. And when It came to going through a door, she never plowed through to be first, I, the master/leader, had to go first always. (I loved that about her) And she was perfect on the lead, healing, never pulling always at my left side. I dont think I will have another dog ever that will come close to her well manners.

Greyhound Training
I have two that know how to sit. I taught Whiskey to sit by scooping his legs underneath him and saying the word, SIT. It took several months for him to get it on his own. He doesn't like to do it though. Lock Up learned to sit, down and speak (wish the last they had not taught him!)kris wrote:I've been curious about teaching my greyhound to sit since I've heard that their body type doesn't allow for easy sitting.
