Bob & I feed our kids...

Post  Bonnie & Clyde on Wed Oct 01, 2008 11:34 am

Bob & I feed our "kids" (Commish, Anna & Mel) -IAMS lamb & rice, can normally get on sale at different stores.
I also "prepare" a type of canned food and add a cup to each of their dry IAMS.
I found the recipe in the Celebrating Greyhounds magazine & I modified "a little" for our kids tastes. Basically, it's a 10lb bag of chicken parts - (normally can buy at Walmart for under $5.00 a bag), a large can of plain pumpkin (to stablize their stools), 36 oz of macaronni, a bag of frozen spinach (Commish will only eat spinach no other vegees), seasonings; fresh ginger (for their digestion) & chopped garlic.
I prepare all in the slow cooker in different stages or the pressure cooker, cooking the chicken first for most of the day if using slow cooker, depending on my time available - & usually lasts a month, assuming Bob measures the correct amount out Smile - I also freeze in small batches.
Been doing this for a few years now - our Commish had some "real" sensitive digestive issues when we first got him (right Joanne?) and it's worked - and if it ain't broke - don't fix it or change it! Plus, never know what is really in canned dog food - has always been a worry of ours and it's a lot cheaper - have the preparation & cooking system down pretty good anymore & it goes pretty smoothly - and buy most on sale ahead of time. Will be making a "batch" this weekend as a matter of fact I love you
Enjoy our fall weather! Kath

Sierra and Rory have been on Pet Promise for about three years. They've done very well on it. No rendered meats, animal by-products or slaughterhouse scraps. The meat comes from US family farms and ranches. No antibiotics or growth hormones. I get it at Whole Foods ($35/25 pounds). Petco also carries it but it's about $5 more a bag. I always stir in a little canned food with water or shredded cheese with water. Neither likes any dry food alone.

Rory especially likes bunny treats from the backyard, which causes terrible gas. Sierra prefers leftovers from the cats' bowls, but she also gets treats from the classroom floors at school. Cheetos, popcorn, crayons -- she's not afraid to try anything. :-P

Hi everyone, Bandit, Katrina (our Greyhound mix) and Belle (rat terrier/beagle) have had very good digestion on Nature's Variety. It's kinda expensive depending on the variety at about $45 to $52 for a 30# bag. We tried many different type's of food at Petsmart but Bandit alway's seemed to have loose stool's and bad gas. After talking with the owner of Pets-R-Us we tried Nature's Variety and have been pleased.
We alternate between 5 different flavor's of the dry food changing the flavor at the end of each bag as per there instruction's. We also tried the raw frozen variety once before as a holiday treat but the kid's enjoy the canned rabbit (go figure Laughing ) much better.
I have found the food at 3 different retailer's in Omaha, Pets-R-US in Rockbrook Village at 108th @ Center, Petland at 120th @ Center and Nature Dog 129th @ Maple.

We feed our hounds Eagle Pack Holistic. It's expensive (the prices just went up again, to $50/33 lb bag, ouch) but it contains probiotics (including a couple of flavors of lactobacillus), along with a list of healthy ingredients (chicken meal, a couple rices, oatmeal, pork meal, etc.). Bow has been on penicillin for a month and a half to clear up her recurring abcess problem, and the probiotics have kept her BM's firm the whole time. We also found out the hard way through the yogurt solution for gas, that she's lactose intolerant. Eagle Pack came to the rescue again and got her regular again right away (that and limiting the yogurt to the boys, who are the only two who apparently can tolerate lactose.)

We buy from Pets-R-Us, but checking the Eagle Pack website, Double K Feed also stocks it.

For those new to greyhounds, keep in mind that if they're tearing around in the back yard/dog park/play day, a certain amount of "liquifaction" takes place, and their stools will be very loose. This isn't necessarily cause for concern, unless the diarrhea continues without the physical exertion.

Eagle Pack has a couple of oils/fats in it, but we also add Dream Coat to their evening meal. It has several oils (Safflower, Codliver, Sunflower, Wheatgerm, etc.), at least some of which contain essential fatty acids (those that the dogs can't synthesize themselves), which helps keep their coats soft and shiny. It seems to help with Hoss' dandruff, too.

We feed Hero & Lady Costco's equivalent of Science Diet's Lamb & Rice. It seems to agree with their tummies more than actual Science Diet and a few other brands/flavors we've tried.

Luckily the Costco equivalent is relatively small pieces - because our pup won't eat the regular size dog food either.

They each get a spoonful of plain yogurt in the morning as well.

On special occasions, I mix V8, cottage cheese, shredded cheese or veggies in with their food as well.

(As for your question on gas - both of ours still smell pretty bad on this, but it is an improvement over actual Science Diet. And they don't have the "runs" with this, but their stool is quite soft.)

Food for the greyhounds

Post  Jo Bednarz on Tue Sep 30, 2008 7:46 am

Many in our group have greyhounds from Mickim Kennels. They are fed Exceed dry with raw daily at the kennel and track. So, I have a feeling it must agree with most of the hounds as they wouldn't want the runs/cages filled with diarrhea. I have wondered about the quality, but it sounds like it is pretty good. I need to get a Sam's card and try some. I would also like to keep some here at the Shelter b/c when the hounds arrive here and they are put on Science Diet (we mix puppy and adult together, so it is rich for them) they usually have diarrhea problems. I try to get a container of adult only Science Diet in their kennel when they arrive to help with this situation, but they still have issues b/c of the quick diet change.

Canidae is a great food--I know of a lot of folks that feed it. It is a really good quality food.

I feed Science Diet small bites b/c my old guys won't touch anything larger and I have tried other better quality foods in the small bites and it, too, gives them diarrhea.

I have also tried raw and none of my guys will touch it.

I have had really good luck with Sam's Exceed Lamb & Rice. I've given it to all (now on #3 & #4) my grey ones. Its got great protein and no fillers, so not as much to clean up in the yard - if you know what I mean! Price is about $25 for 44 lbs, so with the two of them, a bag will last me about a month.

I Love Canidae, the stuff may be a little more, but My Cooky had a sensitive tummy, with the runs and gas always. The stuff was introduced to me by another fellow, greyhound owner, thank God. It was the only stuff that agreed with her digestion.

Now my Carmel has slight kidney disease so she is on purena N/F, if not for that I would use Canidae only. I mix in some rice with her N/F.
I bought a gigantic bag of rice at costco, to last a while. But I add some ketchup, or gravey to the rice and dry mix. Only cause I know she hates the purena N/F, and I have to add some flavor to it.

What food do you give your hound?

Post  sam13_463 on Fri Sep 26, 2008 8:42 pm

I'm currently feeding Dermit Iams Large Breed dry dog food, and he likes it fine, but once in a while he has some pretty raunchy gas. I was wondering what everyone was feeding their hounds and whether or not they were happy with the results.

Actually, I just looked at the Iams feeding guidelines, and Dermit has been getting a little more than he should be according to those guidelines, maybe giving him slightly less will help with the gas. I'd still be interested in hearing what you're feeding your hounds.
